Keyboard shortcuts

A few keys to work without the mouse: open an entry from any page, chain entries without closing the window, and jump between the pages of an engagement.

Ctrl+E: a new entry, from anywhere

In an engagement, Ctrl + E opens the New entry window in the middle of the screen, on top of the page you are on: the trial balance, the general ledger, a worksheet. The client's name and the fiscal year are shown under the title. Once the entry is saved, you are still on the same page.

Outside an engagement (dashboard, client list), Ledger first asks "Which dossier?": type a few letters of the client's name, pick the fiscal year with the arrows, then Enter. Closed fiscal years are not offered, since they no longer accept entries.

Ctrl+Enter: chain entries

To post a series of entries, press Ctrl + Enter instead of clicking Save. The entry is saved and the window starts over, empty, for the next one, with the same date and the same type of entry. The cursor waits in the description, and the bottom of the window counts the entries posted: "3 entries saved, the next one is ready".

Alt+1 to Alt+9: the engagement's pages

In an engagement, these keys go straight to its most used pages:

KeysPage
Alt + 1Trial balance
Alt + 2Adjusting entries
Alt + 3Virtual case
Alt + 4Groupings
Alt + 5Bank transactions
Alt + 6General ledger
Alt + 7Reconciliation
Alt + 8Tax report
Alt + 9Financial statements (Print and configuration)

The key is shown in grey to the right of each page in the engagement's left menu. Use the digits in the top row of the keyboard: on Windows, Alt with the numeric keypad types characters (such as Alt + 0233 for é).

Ctrl+K: find a page, an entry or a client

Ctrl + K opens search, like a click on the "Search" bar at the top of the screen. Type a few letters:

The arrows select, Enter opens, Esc closes.

Compilation forms: answer from the keyboard

In Forms (compilation), click a question (C1-10, C3-10, file closing…): it gets a blue outline. Then:

AN/A (not applicable)
↓ ↑Next or previous question
EscLeaves the question

After an answer, the next unanswered question is selected for you. An unfavourable answer (for example “No” to “Does management understand the limited nature of the engagement?”) turns amber: the cursor moves to the explanation, to be filled in before concluding. The keys do nothing while you are typing in a field.

i
Why not Ctrl+W or Ctrl+2?

The browser keeps some keys for itself: Ctrl + W closes the tab, Ctrl + T and Ctrl + N open one, and no website can use them. Ctrl + 1 to 9 switch tabs: Ledger leaves them to the browser, so you can keep several engagements open side by side.

!
An open window comes before shortcuts

While an entry (or any other window) is open, Alt + 2 does not change page and Ctrl + E does not open a second entry: you never lose work in progress. Close the window first.

Frequently asked questions

I press Alt+3 and nothing happens.

Check three things: you are in an engagement (the Alt keys only open an engagement's pages), no window is open, and you use the digit in the top row of the keyboard, not the one on the numeric keypad.

Ctrl+E sends me to the browser's address bar.

The key reached the browser instead of Ledger. Click once in the Ledger page, then try again. If Ledger was just updated, refresh the page once (F5).

What about a Mac?

The same shortcuts, with ⌘ instead of Ctrl (⌘ + E, ⌘ + Enter, ⌘ + K) and Option instead of Alt for pages.
